Torbay Week 2010 Sailing Programme Update

For 2010, it is planned to have four courses.  There will be two for keelboat fleets, one for mixed handicap dinghies and an additional dinghy course for junior dinghy classes.  The types of boats planned for the courses are as follows:

Course K1 (Race Officer Robert Penfold):

IRC Cruisers (excluding IRC Rated Dayboats): Nine races are planned between Saturday and Tuesday. The sailing instructions can be downloaded here.

Course K2 (Race Officer Robin Meads):

This is for Sports Boats, PY Cruisers, Sonatas, Folkboats & Dayboats. Sports Boats will sail twelve races between Saturday and Tuesday and the others eight (except that PY Cruisers and Sonatas may have a coastal race instead of two races on one of trhe four days). The PY Cruising class category is for cruisers that do not hold an IRC Certificate and for whom a Portsmouth Yardstick handicap number is applicable. The class is intended to encourage boats with small or family crews and an option applies for boats to enter by declaration of racing with or without a spinnaker or geneker. It is therefore important to complete the self-measurement form (on the website) and make sure it is sent to us well before the start of the Regatta, so that the PY number can be allocated in good time. The sailing instructions can be downloaded here, with the course layout here.

Course D1 (Race Officer Bill Butcher):

All dinghies with a helm (and crew if applicable) under 18 on 27th August 2010.  After Saturday, when assessments will be held, there are ten races planned between Sunday and Wednesday. The sailing instructions can be downloaded here.

Course D2 (Race Officer Hugh Sutherland):

Day One of the dinghy racing programme for Torbay Week 2010 on Saturday saw 25 boats on the water outside Paignton Harbour. South-westerly winds of around 18 knots were kicking up a chop, even in the sheltered waters of Torbay and competitors found conditions testing. Quite a few failed to complete the scheduled 3-race programme. In the asymmetric fleet, Rod Boswijk from Plymouth sailed his B14 consistently and finished the day with a modest points cushion over the RS200’s of Adrian Peach and William Hussey. The handicap fleet sailed an Olympic-style course of ‘triangles and sausages’.  The Tasar of Neil Spacagna and Anne Panther won every race in the Medium fleet. This gives them a comfortable margin over the Wayfarer sailed by the McGrath’s (from Starcross) and the Tasar helmed by John Lawton. In the small Fast handicap fleet, a different boat has won in every race and thus no consistent leader has yet emerged.

Day Two of the dinghy racing in Torbay Week 2010 proved a complete contrast to the first day. The wind never rose above a light breeze, and the hardest working people on the water were the marklayers who were constantly laying, lifting and resetting the course as the wind conditions changed. After an hour’s delay, the wind settled a little and it was possible to run the planned series of 3 races.
In the asymmetric fleet, Rod Boswijk and Sharon Harle maintained their consistent form in a B14, and finished the series well clear of Adrian Peach and Peter Cayless sailing a RS200. In the medium handicap fleet, the Tasers found that the light conditions favoured them less than the heavier boats with bigger rigs. This left the Wayfarer, sailed by the McGraths from Starcross, just ahead of the Simmons in their Albacore. In the fast handicap fleet, results proved just as varied as on Saturday. Chris Tilbrook, sailing a RS600, finished overall winner on a ‘most firsts’ countback to break his tie with Dale Giles in a Fireball.

Monday Dinghy Pursuit Race (Race Officer David Homer):

With the wind at westerly force 5 gusting force 6 and expected to increase, the dinghy pursuit race was abandoned.

Friday RNLI Pursuit Race (Area K2 - Race Officer Tim Corbett):

This 90 minute early evening pursuit race is traditionally held with crews in fancy dress. Prizes are awarded for the first three finishes and for the best dressed crews. Starting times are based on the handicaps issued by the Race Committee. Yachts with crews not in fancy dress may incur additional handicap weighting of 20% of the yacht’s elapsed time. All proceeds are in aid of the RNLI. The sailing instructions can be downloaded here.

Wednesday Pursuit Race (Area K1 - Robert Penrose):

This event is open to all keelboats and the time limit shall reflect the median handicap boat sailing for approximately 100 minutes. The slowest boat will have its warning signal at 10:30 and the stating times are listed on the website here. The sailing instructions can be downloaded here.

Wednesday Passage Race to Dartmouth (Race Officer Robin Meads):

This race is organised by the Joint Regatta Commitee for Dartmouth Week and entry forms will be here. The start will be off Battery Point in Brixham with the warning signal will be at 13:55. The start time will depend on the weather on the day, taking into account the tidal conditions! The sailing instructions can be downloaded from the Dartmouth Regatta website (http://www.dartmouthweek.com/) with further information provided here.
